More reports of scams and fraud
NHS
Here’s another Spam message. It is a very convincing-looking message purporting to be from the NHS and headed NHSAlerts. It says that the reader been in close contact with a person who has contracted the Omicron variant. It directs the reader to order a test kit and gives a link. Clicking on the link gives an equally convincing page which says the reader must order a free PCT test kit, but s/he would have to pay £0.99 for postage.
Ringing 119 confirms that this is not a legitimate NHS text message on the following grounds:
- The NHS never asks for money or bank details
- No name appears in the message
- PCR tests are no longer issued unless to someone registered as eligible for Covid treatments
- ‘NHSAlerts’ is not how NHS sends messages
- Variants are never mentioned!
If you receive one of these please delete it straight away. If you have the NHS app you can check for legitimate messages there.
Ofgem – this scam, reported in E-link 157 is serious! Action Fraud has received 752 reports in four days relating to fake emails purporting to be from Ofgem. The emails state that the recipient is eligible for a rebate as a result of a newly announced government scheme. The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal your personal and financial information.
