During the Covid lockdowns groups in Bristol were formed to share garden and urban wildlife info and pictures – over time these groups have grown and developed to allow sharing communication and participation in wildlife activities throughout the central Bristol postcodes covering BS1 – 16 and BS34
Each postcode group also has an attendant iNaturalist project the biggest citizen science project on the planet and an awesome resource for anyone interesting in wildlife wanting to learn more or help with climate change and wildlife protection
using the Facebook groups allows you to:
- see what wildlife is present around you
- connect with other nature enthusiasts
- share your knowledge
- learn from other people
- find out about local wildlife events and activities
- promote your own wildlife events and activities to interested people in you immediate local area
Using iNaturalist is a great way learn:
- the app helps you identify things you see ( with peer review so if you’re not sure or get it wrong helpful people will give you better identifications)
- record verification is a great way to test out and improve your own knowledge while helping other people
- contribute to local knowledge the records are shared automatically with BRERC https://www.brerc.org.uk/ and the NBN nature atlas https://nbnatlas.org/
We’ve now had 5000 identified species records posted on iNaturalist for the Bristol Area and one of our top recorders has just posted their 10,000th record both are huge numbers and amazing to see
