It may be no coincidence that the film ‘Oppenheimer’ has been released at this time of year. It was on 6th August 1945 that the first atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima and a few days later on Nagasaki, resulting in some 225,000 immediate deaths.

The possibility of nuclear war has hung over the world ever since and with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the threats to make use of such weapons, the spectre of mass deaths on an even greater scale rises again.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament may seem to have lost some of its strength, but who can doubt its continued importance?
